Team Croatia comes from Croatian capital city Zagreb - city with a million hearts. The city of Zagreb, capital of Croatia, on the historic and political threshold between East and West, illustrates both the continental and Mediterranean spirit of the nation it spearheads. Zagreb is the cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre of the Republic of Croatia, and is home to the Croatian Parliament, Government and President. Its favourable location between the Pannonian plain, the edge of the Alps and the Dinaric range has allowed it to become a crossing point for mass international communication.

The city is protected from the cold northern winds by the mountain of Medvednica and opens up to the rest of the world thanks to a spacious plain and the Sava river. Zagreb, with a population of nearly one million, contains almost a quarter of the entire population of Croatia.

Over the centuries, the city was inhabited by people coming from all over Europe; and, in recent years, by people coming from different parts of Croatia, ensuring a rich cultural life. Zagreb is a safe city whose doors are always open; a city with a tumultuous history teeming with interesting personalities; a city that warmly invites all those who wish to get to know it, and a city that will surely fulfill your expectations.

In this city, you can easily meet remarkable people, make new friends and enjoy special moments. The façades of Zagreb’s buildings reflect the ebb and flow of history, while its streets and squares bear witness to the coming together of the many cultures that have shaped the identity of this laid-back capital. The best thing to do is when you first arrive is to take in Zagreb’s wonderful atmosphere, which, as many claim, is only surpassed by the legendary beauty of the local womenfolk.

The ninth gymnasium is a general-programm secondary school founded in 1945. The building was built in 1956 by UNESCO. There are approximately 500 students in 20 classes. We share the building with the Second economic high school by working in two shifts. Seven school hours are held per day, one class lasts 45 minutes and after every class there is a 5-minute break. The big break lasts 15 minutes. Four foreign languages can be studied at our school: English, German, Italian and French. Every year students achieve great results in the high school graduation exam and enroll in their preferred faculties. During the year, many competitions, extra-curricular activities and elective programs are held, which aim to encourage the student’s creativity, mutual respect and cooperation between students and teachers. Some of these activities are: the school choir,  first aid, voluntary work, astronomy, sign language, creative workshops, Russian and more. It is extremely important to all of us that our students, apart from getting a high-quality education, develop their potentials as much as possible.

IX. gymnasium from Zagreb is a general secondary school with 523 students and 45 employees (teachers and other staff). They are experienced in organising school exchange projects with European countries and the USA. They have launched a number of successful virtual projects with schools worldwide. Currently they are piloting a project on the pedagogical use of ICT in education. In the school the first Croatian Future Classroom was opened in 2013. The classroom is used on a daily basis by teachers of different subjects. It is also used as a lifelong learning space where professional development workshops are organized for teachers from the school and also from schools all over Croatia and other European countries. They have successfully implemented Erasmus and Comenius projects.

A very important accomplishment achieved by school’s STEM teachers is the creation of four innovative curricula for teaching Astronomy, ICT, Biology and Physics as elective subjects.

The curricula have been published as open educational resources and shared with the entire educational community in Croatia. Special care is taken of students with special needs. The school has taken part in two large-scale projects on inclusion involving primary and secondary schools as well as a not-for-profit organization. The school’s volunteering team plays an important role in helping people in need in the city of Zagreb.

IX. gymnasium has a long history of intercultural collaboration and exchange projects in which the majority of teachers have taken an active role in order to teach students to become accomplished digital citizens. The teachers are proactive in teaching with new technologies and participating in a huge number of different projects.

They are lifelong learners who share the knowledge with fellow educators.
